We offer you this Prayer with the Young Rich Man
TEXT (Mk 10, 17-22)
“As Jesus came out on his way, a man ran to ask him, kneeling before him: Good master, what do I have to do to attain eternal life?
Jesus said unto him, Why do you call me good? The only good one is God. You know the commandments: Thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not commit adultery, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not raise false testimony, thou shalt not cheat, honor thy father and mother.
He retorted: Master, All that I have accomplished since my youth.
Jesus looked at him fondly and said unto him, You have one thing left: go forth, sell all that you have, give it to the poor, and you will have a treasure in heaven; then come and follow me.
Hearing this, the young man left very sad, for he had many goods.”
Find a place and a quiet posture; make outside and inner silence with the focus on breathing.
Make yourself aware that you are in the presence of God.
Make the sign of the cross and ask the Holy Spirit for the grace to listen to the Son to know the will of the Father.
Read the text with peace of mind. I imagine myself involved in the scene. I listen to the dialogue and stop at the details of his gestures.
What words or gestures in this text stand out in your heart? Let them ruminate in a breath.
By way of help: Do I desire as much as this man to “reach eternal life”? How do I translate this “attaining eternal life” into my life? Do I do everything in my hand (commandments…)? What other things could I do to draw near to Jesus?
Finally, let yourself look as He looks at you, with “love” and tenderness. And answer you: What prevents me from leaving everything today and following you, Lord?
Present to the Father your lights and difficulties.
Whatever the answer, He is still your Father and you are his son. Pray with our Father.
